In the early years, the frequency of the TWOOLS programme was high. The first edition came out in November 1999, with opportunities for three young choreographers to present themselves to the public in the main hall of Rotterdam Schouwburg.
The second TWOOLS followed immediately in May of the same season, with space on the main stage for five individual dance makers, a choreographer duo and a hiphop crew.
Trouw reviewer Eva van Schaik observed that 010 Bboyz, with world champion Paulo Nunes, had much to offer: "Ballet + breakdance makes two, and in the use of their 'tools' they can certainly learn from each other. What the Rotterdam boys on Nikes manage to produce in headspins, electric boogie woogie [sic] and other acrobatic specialties on their square metre of asphalt, Scapino dancers do on pointe shoes, socks, floppy ballet slippers and nowadays even on high-top shoes. Perhaps 'Twools 2' will finally break down the deeply entrenched dividing walls between both dance worlds in the same city on the Maas? What is certain is that the breakdancers have introduced a new audience to the Scapino Ballet and the Rotterdamse Schouwburg over two days.
With four parts of their Point System, the crew, in collaboration with Ed Wubbe, will provide the common thread of this edition, with a rousing live soundtrack by DJ Cut Nice. The waddling gait of the penguin is a recurring element. In between, there are premieres by Ton Lutgerink, Neel Verdoorn, Inma Rubio Tomas, Gaël Domenger, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa and another piece by Wubbe himself.
Lutgerink, one of the three artistic directors of Rotterdam's Onafhankelijk Toneel/Opera O.T., created Wat te doen met de pianist, a work for five dancers to music by Harry de Wit. In Opening Doors With Futile Nails.... Inma Rubio Tomas dances a trio with her fellow Capino dancers Beth Bartholomew and Robert Hlatky. Neel Verdoorn also creates a trio with Darling(s), in which Sacha Steenks, Henna Lee and Annabelle Lopez Ochoa dance.
Gaël Domenger uses music by dancer Javier Velazquez for his group work Like This. Maria Voortman dances the solo Laat me met mij meegaan (Let me go with me), by herself and partner Roberto de Jonge, in which, within the allotted ten minutes, she impressively transforms from a coquettish young woman into a desperate exhibitionist. Anabelle Lopez Ochoa makes Grafitti, a duet in which Bonnie Doets dances on centimetre-thick rubber soles.
