A record number of choreographers are working on the new TWOOLS, including three duos. And no fewer than four women.
Ed Wubbe has brought together a special group of dance makers for TWOOLS 9, people who in previous years have helped to determine the face of Dutch dance. The press release states: "Their work has been performed at all the important dance venues and festivals, but never together on one stage, in one piece.
After Darling(s) in TWOOLS 2, Neel Verdoorn is creating her second piece for TWOOLS, Embrace, set to melancholic tango music by Astor Piazzola. Dance liberators Guy Weizman & Roni Haver present the playful Bowlers Heaven, "a piece with a lot of balls," as they say themselves. For Ragna, the headstrong Pieter de Ruiter and Eva Villanueva were inspired by Scapino dancer Bryndis Brunjolfsdottir and Icelandic mythology. Harry de Wit wrote a new composition for them. Paul Selwyn Norton brings a dynamic trio on pointe, with live music by the Nieuw Amsterdams Peil.
Christophe Garcia won the Scapino Production Prize at the Choreographers' Competition in Hannover and presents Les gens du coin. Garcia loves music and theatre and sees his dancers as characters. Dylan Newcomb, known from NDT and Korzo, presents a surrealistic work to dream away with: Queen Dreams Green. Jérôme Meyer briefly returns to Scapino, where he started dancing 20 years ago. He now works with Isabelle Chaffaud and together they made the group piece Fierce Youth, about self-confidence and belief in the future.
According to the fixed recipe for TWOOLS, the dance pieces are short and are created and presented at high speed, non-stop, alternating with rapid changes of scenery. Each edition produces a different result thanks to the ever-changing choreographers who create dance from totally different perspectives. From up-and-coming talents to choreographers with international experience, from dance innovators to guardians of a certain movement, and from emotionalists to well-considered conceptual builders.
