Marco Goecke

Marco Goecke

Marco Goecke is undoubtedly one of the most acclaimed choreographers in the international dance world today. His choreographies are sensationally idiosyncratic and innovative. In a dark atmosphere, full of suggestion and magic, he touches the spectator deep inside with absurdist - and never-before-seen dance.

Born in Wuppertal and trained at The Hague Conservatory, the young German choreographer Marco Goecke was house choreographer of Scapino Ballet Rotterdam between 2005 and 2011. His first, high-profile choreography as house choreographer for Scapino, Der Rest ist Schweigen (2005) was selected as one of the highlights of the 2005/2006 season for the Nederlandse Dansdagen (Dutch Dance Days).

Scapino presented by Marco Goecke: Äffi and Ring them bells (2006 and 2007), the Dutch premiere of Beautiful Freak (2007) in Heartland, in Waveland (2007) the world premiere of Bravo Charlie and in 4x20 Colourproof (2008) the Dutch premiere of Blushing. In December 2008 the Dutch premiere of The Nutcracker. In 2009 Supernova was part of the program 4x20 Storyproof and in 2010 Pierrot Lunaire was featured in the program Reischl & Goecke, choreographers. In 2010, Suite, Suite, Suite premiered at Scapino. In 2011, together with Ed Wubbe, Goecke created the full-length Songs for Drella.

The international press proclaimed Marco Goecke the new great choreographic talent in 2006 (Ballett/Tanz). In December 2006, Goecke won the Nijinsky Award in Monaco for most promising and outstanding choreographer in the international dance field. In 2007 he was nominated for the Deutsche Theaterpreis 2007.

Slapstick in lightning-fast moves

Marco Goecke is a discovery simply because his style is totally unlike any other. Fascinating is the infinite variety of allusions and movements that he combines and reinvents in each ballet: shadow boxes, pantomime, slapstick in lightning-fast movements and abrupt tempo changes. Behind the scenes, Goecke is always hiding new surprises that come like a jack-in-the-box and surprise or frighten the spectator.
